KUALA LUMPUR: Klang lawmaker Charles Santiago today questioned the
speed in which the government had become knowledgeable on nuclear power
plants within a period of four months.
“We were told that the stakeholders would be consulted in the last
sitting and no decision was made,” he said at a press conference in the
media room.
“On Monday, Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri said
that Malaysia is ready for the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review
(INIR) Phase 1.
“In four months, the government had acquired so much knowledge to
allocate RM23 billion for the construction of two nuclear power plants.
How did the government become knowledgeable in four months?” asked the
DAP man.
Nancy confirmed on Monday that the government received the final INIR
report based on studies conducted since October last year. It will be
tabled in cabinet next week.
The International Atomic Energy Agency recommends three development
phases for nuclear infrastructure. Phase 1 looks into factors taken into
account before deciding to launch nuclear power programmes.
Santiago said the government must now make the INIR report public so that consultations can be made with stakeholders.
He also speculated on the likely states that will have the nuclear power plants.
“It will be either in Johor, Pahang or Sabah near water resources,” he said.
