Launch of "Rethinking Bilateral Investment Treaties : Critical Issues and Policy Choices"

Monitoring Sustainability of GlobalizatioN (MSN) cordially invite you to a book launch entitled: "Rethinking Bilateral Investment Treaties : Critical Issues and Policy Choices".

The book launch will coincide with a public forum titled Free Trade Agreement, Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) and Its Impact on Human Rights.

Speakers :

Kavaljit Singh, book author, researcher at non profit organisation Madhyam and has been focusing on FTA and its impact on developing countries including India.

Dr. Burghard Ilge, Senior Policy Officer with Both ENDS, an independent non-governmental organization based in Amsterdam

Karina Yong, legal consultant for Third World Network, member of National Human Rights Society (HAKAM)

YB Charles Santiago, DAP Member of Parliament and Chairperson of ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights

The book brings together the experiences of a variety of countries in managing FTAs and in particular Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) mechanism.

Specifically the speakers will examine how ISDS forces governments to potentially surrender their policy making space, sovereignty of nations to multinational corporations. ISDS has a tendency to undermine the local judicial system.

Malaysia will have an ISDS chapter in all the three major FTAs it is presently negotiating such as the TPPA, RCEP and EU- Malaysia.

The international civil society have been very critical of the ISDS mechanism that allows investors to sue the state through international tribunals. These tribunals are undemocratically appointed and have the power to penalise elected governments for billions if not millions of US dollars.
